June 2 marks its 65th anniversary the FIRST and BIGGEST Cosmodrom Baikonur in the World! (photo)

The cosmodrome is located on the territory of Kazakhstan, in the Kyzylorda region between the city of Kazalinsk and the village of Dzhusaly, near the village of Tyuratam.

The territory of the Baikonur Cosmodrome is 6,717 km². Together, the Baikonur Cosmodrome and the city of the same name form the Baikonur complex.

The construction project of the “Scientific Testing Ground No. 5” (NIIP-5) was approved on June 2, 1955 and was created by the Cosmodrome with the work of hundreds of thousands of people!

For 65 years, almost 5 THOUSAND rocket launches have been carried out!

It was from this cosmodrome that the first Sputnik was launched, proclaiming the BEGINNING of the SPACE ERA. From Baikonur, in the first in the history of mankind, a human flight into space was carried out!

Launch vehicles that delivered spacecraft with Yuri Gagarin, German Titov, Valentina Tereshkova, Alexei Leonov and other Heroes of our country started from this launch site!

Today, the Baikonur cosmodrome is the main space harbor of Russia, which has opened the world the path to scientific and technological progress, and humanity – the ROAD to SPACE!
